Locally

Our scope is wide: our aims are practical, and our service is needed and includes:

At School Level

We currently sponsor the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest The contest is for 11, 12, and 13 year old school children from the town, who are competing against over 325,000 children worldwide for an ultimate prize of $5,000 plus an all expenses paid trip for the winner and two family members to the final held in The UN Building in New York. For the last 3 years the Borough has provided the winner for the 105W district competition.

We are also currently sponsoring the provision of the following equipment and teaching aids for the Sensory Needs Unit within the mainstream of St. Cenydd Comprehensive School.

In the past we have contributed towards:

the purchase of a specially adapted mini bus with wheelchair access.

We are also currently sponsoring Lions Tacade life skills educational materials, for use by teachers in primary schools with the main object being drug awareness.

We encourage young people to get involved with community service, by sponsoring the annual Lions International Youth Award Scheme.

Xmas Hospital Visits

We visit local hospitals, and residential homes for the elderly with our Father Xmas distributing wrapped gifts to every resident and patient. The gifts are purchased by the Club, and the visits are usually supported by the Chairman of Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Town Mayor and the Caerphilly Ladies Choir. Caerffili Lions have been sponsoring this event for the past 20 years and is thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Caerphilly Skate Board Project

Located in the former indoor market in Caerphilly town center, the skate park will be the center piece of a new indoor multi-sports facility run by local youth organisation Kids In Caerphilly are Krazee (KICK).

The youth club for 13 to 25 year-olds found there was a need for a skate park and have liaised with members as to what type of ramps and facilities they would like in the portable park.

The first phase of the project was completed in time for the Easter holidays thanks to the Caerffili Lions Club, who helped to fund the project. The club bought £3,000 worth of ramps and equipment for the park. This was installed by workers and members of KICK.

Ray Hughson, treasurer of Caerffili Lions Club said, "Something like this was badly needed. A lot of the youngsters had nowhere to skate board in the streets and it was becoming a real problem with young people, residents, police and the authorities at odds. We contacted KICK and this is the result."

Castle View Home

We have recently purchased a patio set and DVD player for the residents.

Caerphilly Trampoline Club

The club has funded the purchase of equipment for the club to specifically help the club encourage disabled members of the public to take up the sport. The equipment is designed to help the club support members of the public as they mount and dismount from the trampolines. Lion Richard Voyle looks on as staff at the club put it to the test!!

Other local beneficiaries have included local youth teams such as Caerphilly Roller Hockey Club and Caerphilly Under 16 youth rugby team, the club have recently also helped fund a holiday for a deserving family within the county borough.

For the last 7 years we have run a free diabetes screening session in conjunction with the local Round Table at Caerphilly's annual Big Cheese event for all visitors.

We also give financial support upon request to other local charity groups, organisations, and individuals. All cases are judged on their individual merits. To contact us regarding support for a project or individual undertaking please contact us via the following email link: Welfare@CaerffiliLions
